Interview with CATC Graphic Design graduate - CATC Blog

03 June 2015

Online study is becoming increasingly common in today’s education world and CATC Design School is no stranger to this. Online courses are a great option if you are juggling work and /or family commitments, or just don't live anywhere near a campus. Helen Sakkas graduated in January 2015 from the online CUV50311 Diploma of Graphic Design at CATC.

Prior to choosing to study with CATC, Helen was working as an event coordinator however switched to study to pursue her passion for design. As an event coordinator she was most engaged in her role when she was working on the design and communications pieces which prompted Helen to seek out her options and think about a career change. Helen’s main reason for choosing CATC was the flexibility of the online course, and throughout her time studying with CATC she found that the course provided relevant and industry ready information with the subjects being very aligned to the industry.

We caught up with Helen recently to chat about her time studying online with CATC:

How relevant and engaging was the course information taught to you in the online CUV50311 Diploma of Graphic Design at CATC?

The course provided the relevant and current educational materials that helped me realise my strengths and areas of development. Every subject delivered is interesting and engaging. The lecturers were also very encouraging and were very attentive to my needs as a student.

How has your career benefited from industry connections made while at CATC?

One subject specifically called ‘Specialisation’ required me to make contact with industry people. Making this contact with industry people is how I met my current mentor. My mentor was a great source of information about the design industry; we attend design networks together and they were a great support in helping me create my print folio and website. This support helped me get to where I am today.

What advice would you give aspiring design students?

Believe in yourself. Do not compare yourself to others. We are all unique and we all have something unique to give. Keep developing your skills and always source inspiration to keep you motivated. Inspiration can come from anything. Do internships during your course. It will benefit your development and assist you with job prospects when your studies are over. Begin to get yourself industry ready during your course so that you are very prepared for your next steps when you finish your studies. Never give up!!

Where are you currently working?

I work on some design freelance pieces and am also currently volunteering at a creative management agency and gallery. It works with 29 amazing artists. They are inspiring. I am also mainly currently seeking internships to keep developing my skills and support me with achieving junior design roles.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

Doing my first freelance project for a café and really nailing the brief. The client was really happy and that was very encouraging.

Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

An accomplished graphic designer and incorporating traditional arts. I will begin painting and illustrating again when I have accomplished my design goals.
